Rural universities ‘better at working with industry’

Australia’s rural universities attract twice as much funding from industry as the elite cohort of city-based universities known as the Group of Eight, according to a federal report.

A study by the Office of the Chief Economist has found rural universities are more actively engaged with industry, and industry-linked research funds are “an important source of income” for regional researchers.

By comparison, the GO8 universities receive more funding from grants allocated by federal research agencies such as the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council.
