Misaligned priorities and issues of trust hamper commercialisation of results, nationwide seminar hears

Research translation in Australia “remains difficult” due to misunderstandings between universities and their industry partners, a national seminar has heard.

The seminar on research commercialisation, held by the Australian Research Data Commons, heard that the priorities of academia and industry often diverge. ARDC director Russell Yardley told the forum that the two groups were usually interested in different research questions. Furthermore, researchers and industry tend to “guard their intellectual property”, creating barriers to collaboration.
