Australia’s universities must prioritise working with business on applied research that will deliver practical results for the economy, federal industry minister Ian Macfarlane has told a national science meeting in Canberra.
Speaking at the Science Meets Parliament dinner on 18 March, Macfarlane said the Coalition government “expects universities and research organisations to be open for business, inventing, patenting and commercialising”.
“If you aren’t applying your research to the real world, think about how to let others do it,” he said.
