Pyne facing resignation calls after losing vote

The Coalition’s plan to deregulate university fees has been rejected by the Senate for a second time, amid demands for education minister Christopher Pyne to be sacked for mishandling his portfolio.

The government’s tertiary reform package, which includes deregulation and higher interest on student loans, was defeated on 17 March, by 34 votes to 30. Labor, the Australian Greens and five of the eight crossbench senators voted against the bill.

But Pyne has drawn an angry response from senators who opposed the reforms by declaring he will introduce a third bill to continue the debate.
