Australia’s social justice commissioner, Mick Gooda, has called on the Abbott government to “quarantine” Indigenous health and education programmes from further cuts in its 2015 federal budget.
The budget measures will be announced to the federal parliament on 12 May by treasurer Joe Hockey.
Early indications from Hockey and finance minister Mathias Cormann suggest that around 32 government agencies will be closed to achieve $450 million in savings. Several government properties in Canberra, including four office blocks, will also be sold.
