Federal education minister Simon Birmingham has moved to overhaul Australia’s research grants system, saying it’s time to stop favouring applicants who focus on “trying to get published” to boost their global ranking scores.
As a first step toward reform, Birmingham wants universities to take part in a study that will measure the economic and social value of Australian Research Council grants.
The ARC will introduce the Engagement and Impact Assessment in 2017 as a voluntary programme, ahead of a national roll-out of the new funding system in the following year.
