Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has moved swiftly to lock in Australia’s commitment to global action on climate change, following Donald Trump’s emphatic win in the US presidential elections.
Turnbull announced that Australia has ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change, and will “actively and fully” meet its emissions reduction targets outlined in the treaty.
The move also serves as a warning to the ultra-conservative One Nation party that Australia’s commitment to the Paris treaty is not negotiable. Members of the far-right party are vocal climate sceptics and have claimed that Trump’s election victory will force the collapse of the global agreement.
