Minister promises research will avoid budget cuts

The federal government’s recently announced 2.5 per cent “efficiency dividend” for higher education will not apply to research funding, Australia's education minister Simon Birmingham has said.

The cut was announced as part of the 2017 federal budget and is expected to save the Turnbull government around $2.8 billion.

Speaking at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia meeting in Adelaide on 19 May, Birmingham said the cut will be applied to the Commonwealth Grants Scheme for universities in 2018 and 2019.
