Academia urged to back marriage equality vote

Australian universities are being asked to join a national campaign to protest against the Turnbull government’s decision not to allow a parliamentary “conscience vote” on marriage equality reforms.

There has been a strong public backlash on social media against the Coalition’s plan to canvass public opinion on the issue through a voluntary postal vote that will cost the country around $122 million.

Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has been accused by Labor and independent senator Nick Xenophon of “caving in” to pressure from the Coalition’s far-right conservative faction.
