University of Melbourne academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an early-career researcher in Islamic studies, has been named by the federal government as one of three Australians detained in Iran.

Foreign affairs minister Marise Payne (above) told federal parliament last week that she had met her Iranian counterpart to press for the release of Moore-Gilbert and two Australian travel bloggers who were filming their journey across Iran.

She said the Australian government was making efforts to ensure the three prisoners were “treated fairly, humanely and in accordance with international norms”.
