‘We need better understanding of China’s impact on Australia’

There needs to be much better public understanding of China’s impact on Australia, says Kerry Brown, newly appointed executive director of the University of Sydney's China Studies Centre, in an interview posted to the university’s website on 13 August.

“In Europe, China is still viewed as a little remote. For Australia, China is much more immediate, making the policy challenges of engaging with it sharper and more demanding”, he said.

Brown, who holds a PhD in modern Chinese language and politics, was Head of the Asia programme at UK-based policy think tank Chatham House, before taking the post in Sydney.

Established in 2011, the Centre employs more than 130 academic staff engaged in teaching and research on China.
