Manufacturing firms ready to support research cooperation

One of Australia’s top business groups is urging its members to support a funding bid to establish a national manufacturing industry research centre.

The Australian Industry Group, which represents more than 6,000 manufacturing and engineering businesses, is working with a group of research partners that includes the University of Melbourne and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to develop a proposal for a Cooperative Research Centre for Manufacturing Industry Innovation.

The aim is to bring together science, engineering and business researchers to work directly with Australian companies to develop new technologies to boost the productivity and efficiency of Australian manufacturing. A funding application, outlining a seven-year research programme for the centre, will be lodged next month in the new round of annual bidding for federal funds under the Cooperative Research Centre programme.
