Barley farmer and agriculture-policy innovator Terry Enright has been appointed to be chairman of the University of Western Australia’s Institute of Agriculture advisory board.
Over the past 30 years, Enright has served in a number of influential state and federal roles contributing to agricultural policy, education and research. As former chairman of the federal Grains Research and Development Corporation he helped turn the agency into a major investor in agricultural research, with an annual R&D budget of around $100 million. He also oversaw a reorganisation of Australia’s wheat-breeding research, strengthening its national and commercial focus.
Enright takes over at the UWA from Bruce Piper—former director of the Council of Grain Grower Organisations—who stepped down in May after more than five years as inaugural chair of the institute’s industry advisory board.
