Backlash forces UWA to cancel think-tank plans

The University of Western Australian would have lost “millions” in public donations if it had continued with plans to host a research centre headed by Danish climate change sceptic Bjorn Lomborg.

Academic staff at UWA told Research Professional that alumni and philanthropists contacted the university and threatened to cancel “at least $3 million” in donations and bequests.

They said protests over Lomborg’s appointment became “a public relations nightmare” for UWA, threatening to undermine a $400m fundraising campaign to increase the number of research chairs and postdoctoral fellowships.
