Birmingham urges ‘bold’ approach to space science

Federal education minister Simon Birmingham has called on Australia’s universities to support research that will inspire the next generation of space scientists.

Launching an international space education programme at the University of South Australia in Adelaide on 11 January, Birmingham quoted the words of Captain Kirk, the character played by Canadian actor William Shatner in the popular 1960s television series Star Trek.

Birmingham said science should take risks and seek “to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life…[and] boldly go where no man has gone before”.
