ARC impact study ‘must value basic research’

Universities Australia chief executive Belinda Robinson has warned that curiosity-driven research must not be undermined by a federal plan to measure the commercial and social benefits of research grants.

Robinson said that UA members had worked closely with government and industry to develop the Australia Research Council’s pilot study to measure the impact and engagement of research.

The Canberra-based organisation, made up of vice-chancellors, is the main lobby group for Australian universities.
