A Senate report has called for changes to the Australian government’s university funding system to provide more support for rural distance education centres.
The report says that despite coordinating university courses and acting as “study hubs” for rural students, these regional centres cannot apply for funding administered by the Higher Education Support Act.
The report found that organisations, such as the Geraldton Universities Centre in mid-west coastal Western Australia, played a critical role in supporting students who want to live and work in regional towns while completing their degree.
