Skills used to hack ANU ‘shocked experts’, says vice-chancellor

Spear-phishing email did not require recipient to click on link or download attachment

A massive cyberattack that compromised data systems at the Australian National University in Canberra was launched with a single “spear-phishing” email sent to a senior staff member, an investigation has revealed.

Vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt (above) said the sophisticated methods used by the hackers had “shocked even the most experienced Australian security experts”.
