Global monitoring project at risk without EU funding

Members of the European Parliament have criticised the European Commission’s decision not to fund the satellite Earth observation programme GMES from the EU budget for 2014-2020.

The Draft Report on a Space Strategy for the EU builds on the Commission’s strategy for space, published in April. In the report, discussed by the Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy committee on 5 October, rapporteur Aldo Patriciello said that previous spending on Global Monitoring for Environment and Security would go to waste if the Commission did not provide financial stability.
