Anyone irritated by the ever-growing influence of university rankings systems may be reassured to learn that even the exalted rankers are not above reproach. In the past few weeks, our sister publication Research Africa has established that three universities of international standing—two in Africa and one in the Caribbean—were missing entirely from the world rankings produced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) of London. Then last week, we found arithmetical errors in the new QS Latin American rankings. So who will sit in judgement of the judges?
