Europe’s particle physics laboratory Cern has launched the design phase of a Large Hadron Collider luminosity upgrade.
Luminosity measures the collision rate in a particle accelerator and therefore indicates its performance level. The High Luminosity LHC study aims to raise the collider’s luminosity to a factor of 5 to 10 above today’s value by 2020.
