Public consultations and stakeholder conferences abound in EU policy making, but the European Commission mandates its own specialist bodies. Tania Rabesandratana finds out about these ‘expert’ groups.

The European Commission regularly launches public consultations to seek input about a range of issues. This year, it gathered views about its proposal for a Common Strategic Framework for EU research and innovation funding, the bio-based economy and the European Innovation Partnership on active and healthy ageing—among many other topics. Besides these consultations, the Commission organises conferences on an equally broad range of subjects.
