Philanthropy not for everyone, concludes report

A “rush to fundraise” may not be worthwhile for many European universities, a study carried out on behalf of the European Commission has concluded.

Fundraising efforts and government incentives alone are not enough to stimulate private donations to universities, says Giving in Evidence: Fundraising from philanthropy in European universities. Instead a university’s history and pre-existing links with donors—which the report labels “accumulative advantage”—is crucial.
