Only one-fifth of climate data is openly available

Only 20 per cent of European climate data is openly available for research use, according to findings by researchers at the University Rovira and Virgili in Spain and the University of East Anglia in the UK. This is particularly true for historical climate data, which researchers need to make accurate climate predictions and study the effects of past climate abnormalities. The authors of the study, based at the Rovira and Virgili Centre for Climate Change, say governments should convert paper-based data into digital formats to improve access.
