The EU will publish its first ranking of higher education institutions by 2013, education commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said on 20 September. At a press briefing in Brussels, Vassiliou told journalists that international university rankings don’t reflect the quality of higher education in Europe because they are based on research performance. The Commission has been supporting a feasibility study of the new rankings, to be called U-Multirank. The scheme will be “very important so that students can make an informed choice”, Vassilliou said.
