Francesco Profumo’s appointment in August as president of Italy’s National Research Council could be a beacon of hope for the organisation. The former rector of the Polytechnic University of Turin tells Marta Paterlini that he will put an end to nepotism and chronic budget shortages that have battered the CNR in the past.

What do you plan to do about the lack of funding at CNR?

My strategy is based on Europe. Italy must have a strong connection with the follow-up programme to Framework 7 and collaborate with researchers from different countries who are specialized in different fields.
