MEPs propose targets for global sustainability summit

The European Parliament wants next year’s UN summit on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro to set “accountable targets”, including global goals on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

A resolution approved by MEPs on 29 September lists recommendations for desired outcomes at the event in June which is due to take place 20 years after the first UN “Earth Summit”. The resolution was passed by a majority of 449 to 103, with 45 abstentions.
