Photonics industry bids for €1.4bn of EU research funding

The European photonics industry has put €5.6 billion on the table and asked the EU for another €1.4bn from its next long-term budget. The combined €7bn would fund a giant public-private partnership, industry lobby Photonics21 proposed on 14 September.

The partnership would fund research and development of technologies including ultra-high speed communication networks; laser-based manufacturing processes; medical diagnostics; or low-energy lighting.
