Tax breaks could keep industry R&D in Switzerland, study says

Switzerland should introduce tax breaks to prevent corporate R&D from leaving the country, says a report released on 23 August.

Swiss companies are shifting more and more of their research activities abroad, the study reveals. In 2004, businesses spent about the same amount on R&D in Switzerland and abroad. But in 2008, business expenditure on domestic R&D amounted to CHF12 billion (€10bn), while spending on R&D abroad reached CHF15.8 billion (€13bn).
