Innovation gap ‘may widen’

The innovation gap between EU member states is likely to increase as financial strains take their toll, according to a review of EU competitiveness published on 10 October. The Industrial Performance Scoreboard found that, although the innovation performance of EU countries has been converging, it may diverge again due to different responses to the financial crisis. Strong innovators are promoting R&D, while others are scaling back their support, the report warns.
