All falls down

The October plenary session of the European Parliament kicked off with an update on the strength of the Parliament’s building. As we reported in September, cracks have been discovered in the roof beams in the main debating chamber, leading to evacuation and relocation of surrounding offices. According to the October plenary report, subsequent repair works are likely to take “some considerable time”. But MEPs will draw comfort from an announcement that the building is sound enough for the visit by German chancellor Angela Merkel on 7 November to go ahead as planned.
