Van Rompuy vows to work towards budget compromise

Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, has dampened the European Parliament’s hope for budget boost for research by saying that a “moderation budget” will be needed.

Speaking to the European Parliament on Tuesday, Van Rompuy said that financing certain areas including research and development is seen as important by the Council. However, he reiterated that his proposal for spending, which reduces the Commission’s €80bn proposal for Horizon 2020, is not “out of line”.
