Award panels must recognise bias, gender summit concludes

Members of panels that award research funding should be trained to recognise and avoid gender bias in their assessments, according to recommendations from the 2012 European Gender Summit.

Summit participants agreed that processes for evaluating research grants need to be examined because they put women at a disadvantage, states a report from the summit. This includes better training for decision-makers who sit on panels that award such grants, the report said.
