Commission produces guide for smart specialisation

The European commissioners for environment and regional policy have published a practical guide to help policymakers promote sustainable regional development.

The guide, which came out yesterday (6 Dec 2012), focuses on strategies for so-called smart specialisation. In this approach, cohesion funds are allocated for activities in which a region already has a competitive advantage. The guide asks policymakers to consider a region’s potential for innovation, paying particular attention to sustainable energy, eco-innovation, and activities that support the ecosystem.
