DAAD backs continuing cooperation with Iran

Margret Wintermantel, president of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), has confirmed the organisation’s support for cooperation between the Institute for Religious Studies at the University of Potsdam in Brandenburg and the University of Religions and Denominations in Qom, Iran.

Her comments in Bonn on 23 August follow concern about the cooperation, which started last year, voiced in newspaper articles by sociologist Wahied Wahdat-Hagh, a German-Iranian scholar, and in a letter to the Potsdam institute by its former director, Karl E. Grözinger. The Qom university is loyal to the Iranian government, which does not accept the independence of Israel and has been the subject of international sanctions since 2006.
