European researchers challenge Commission on GM crops

A network of scientists has lodged a complaint with the European Commission on its decision to authorise use of the genetically engineered soybean Intacta by US firm Monsanto.

The European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility is protesting against the bean, which is grown in Brazil under the brand name Intacta, and can now legally be imported to the EU for use in food and feed. Authorised by the European Food Safety Authority in June, ENSSER claims Efsa has failed to meet the legal requirements for risk assessment of the soybean.
