Failed university reforms fuel academic exodus from Greece

Greece’s large-scale reform of academia, which was announced in August last year, has failed to materialise, forcing many researchers to find work abroad.

Government plans to select some universities for protection and merge or wind down others have not been implemented. The reform included a proposal, the so-called Kallikratis plan, which would have given surviving institutions more power over budgets and staff, but so far Greece’s politicians have not granted any of these rights.
