Fresh clinical trials rules unveiled

The European Commission has proposed a reform of its much-criticised clinical trials rules in a bid to make drug research in Europe simpler. In particular, the Commission has proposed to simplify rules for clinical trials conducted in more than one EU country. The Commission hopes that updated rules will help reverse a trend for drug research to be driven out of Europe by soaring costs and red tape: between 2007 and 2011, the number of applications for clinical trials fell by 25 per cent in the EU. The proposal acknowledges that the Commission’s own 2001 Clinical Trials Directive has contributed to this decline.
