ICT research intensity stays strong through crisis

Research intensity levels within the information and communication technology industry stayed high during the financial downturn, according to a report by the Joint Research Council’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies.

The report, based on figures for 2008 and 2009, states that that ICT research intensity in the EU remained high during those years. Research intensity is defined in the report as the spending on R&D relative to the industry’s profit minus production costs. ICT research intensity was 5.4 per cent in 2008 and 5.3 per cent in 2009 in the EU.
