Science group warns of demise of basic research

Horizon 2020 risks segregating basic and applied research, warns Science Europe, an association of national research organisations and funders.

In a position statement on the Horizon 2020 proposal, published in December, the Brussels-based group expressed concern that the programme’s focus on innovation and societal challenges could neglect fundamental work. The group wrote that it appreciated that one of the programme’s three pillars was being devoted to basic research, but said funding for such efforts should be made available under all pillars.
