Hollande secures socialist candidacy

François Hollande, leader of the French Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008, has won the race to become the party's candidate for the 2012 presidential elections.

Hollande, former partner of the 2007 socialist presidential candidate Ségolène Royal, was announced as the candidate on 16 October after beating Martine Aubry, the current PS leader.
