GM maize ban ruled illegal

France failed to follow EU legal procedures when it banned cultivation of genetically modified (GM) maize commercialised by agribusiness giant Monsanto in 2008, the European Court of Justice has ruled.

The 8 September ruling, however, referred to a regulation allowing the possibility of adopting “emergency measures” in “a situation which is likely to constitute a clear and serious risk to human health, animal health or the environment”.
