Senate approves stem cell revision

The French Senate has voted in favour of relaxing the laws on stem cell research in order to enable more of the work to take place in France.

On 4 December, the upper house voted to amend the national bioethics bill to move from a system which banned stem cell research except under certain circumstances to one that allows it with conditions.

Prior to his election this year, the president, François Hollande, pledged to change the law to support scientific progress.

The amendment will be debated in the National Assembly in 2013.
