The French government has appealed to the European Commission to ban biotechnology firm Monsanto from producing genetically modified corn variety MON810.
In a statement published on 20 February, ecology minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet said the appeal is based on new science that suggests the culture of the corn poses environmental risks.
