France leads calls for international action on ragweed

The French government held an international conference in Lyon on 29 and 30 March aimed at international action to combat the spread of ragweed, an invasive plant that carries significant risks to public health.

The government is concerned about the risks to public health and also to agriculture posed by the spread of the plant across France and beyond. In 2011 it established an observatory to monitor the invasive weed, which is linked to severe allergic reactions and asthma.
