Science academy pushes for hydraulic fracking

The French Academy of Sciences has called for more research into hydraulic fracking, a method banned in France since 2011.

In a document issued on 15 November, the academy says that the government should “launch a sustained research effort” in this area, paving the way for potential commercial exploitation of shale gas.

The research should assess accessible gas reserves, improve exploitation processes, and develop alternative methods to hydraulic fracking and set up a pilot research site to assess their impact. An independent “scientific authority” should oversee the process.
