CNRS faces budget drop and layoffs

The budget for France’s national research centre, the CNRS, is set to decline by nearly 5 per cent in 2014, and more than 500 jobs are expected to be cut.

Details of the draft budget were made public following a meeting on 12 December of the centre’s board, as announced in a statement released by CNRS staff representatives.

“The CNRS draft budget for 2014 is part of a recession logic that the unions condemn,” the statement says, adding that the trend of declining funds and recruitment will harm the future of French research and lead to a brain drain.
