PhD numbers continue to fall

The number of students enrolled in doctoral programmes in French universities declined in 2012-13, despite a slight increase in the overall number of students.

According to figures reported by the ministry of higher education and research, the number of doctoral students in French universities was 62,500 in 2012-13. This was 2.2 per cent down on the previous academic year and the continuation of a decline from 68,200 PhD students in 2006-07.

Meanwhile, the overall number of students in French universities has been steadily increasing since 2007-08, reaching 1.46 million in 2012-13, an increase of 0.8 per cent compared with the previous year.
