Unions to mobilise against poor conditions for research staff

Several unions that represent employees in research and higher education are planning a day of national protest against France's austerity measures.

The lobby group Sauvons La Recherche has drawn attention to what it calls “a disengagement of the state”: a reduction in operations funding for universities and research organisations that has led to job cuts, hiring freezes and an increase in the number of researchers employed in “precarious” conditions.

SLR said the management of staff and higher education payrolls must be returned to the national level, and that the number of research posts must be increased.
