The French government’s higher education and research bill is to be debated in parliament on 22 May amid nationwide protests, including an amendment backed by a Socialist deputy.
The bill sets out wide-ranging reforms for higher education and research, including measures to support innovation and knowledge transfer. However, the government plans to continue with a number of projects already set in motion by the previous administration, a decision which has proved to be unpopular.
Unions and campaign groups argue that the bill does not go far enough to reverse the reforms put in place by the previous government and that it is being rushed through parliament. They want more measures to secure jobs at universities and to scrap a programme aimed at investing billions of euros in a select group of universities. Protests are planned in Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Nantes and Toulouse.
